The liberal media has been nothing short of relentless in attempting to dig up evidence of alleged collusion between then-candidate Donald Trump’s campaign and the Russian government in the 2016 election for nearly a year now, and despite their dogged determination, they keep coming up empty.
They thought they hit the collusion jackpot in July when it was revealed that Donald Trump Jr. and others had held a meeting in Trump Tower in June 2016 with a Russian lawyer named Natalia Veselnitskaya, who allegedly was there to provide dirt on Trump’s opponent, failed Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.
But now The Hill has reported that dishing dirt on Clinton may have been, at best, a secondary side item of discussion, or even simply a deliberate exaggeration made specifically to tempt Trump Jr. into agreeing to sit down for the meeting with the Russian lawyer and a Russian-American lobbyist who wanted instead to discuss rolling back economic sanctions known as the Magnitsky Act.
That revelation came from a newly disclosed email chain sent between Veselnitskaya and music promoter Rob Goldstone on the morning of the meeting. Goldstone had arranged the get-together on behalf of Russian oligarch Aras Agalarov, who had worked with the Trump family on the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow.
The message made clear that the lobbyist, Rinat Akhmetshin, was being brought along because of his extensive knowledge regarding the Magnitsky Act, the members of Congress who could change it, and the Russian response to it — which was to ban the adoption of Russian children by U.S. parents, among other things.
The email chain was provided to The Hill and other media outlets by one of Agalarov’s lawyers, Scott Balber, who told CNN that the meeting was indeed focused on repealing the sanctions, and that Goldstone “probably exaggerated and maybe willfully contorted the facts for the purpose of making the meeting interesting to the Trump people.”
“The documents and what (Veselnitskaya) told me are consistent with my client’s understanding of the purpose of the meeting which was from the beginning and at all times thereafter about her efforts to launch a legislative review of the Magnitsky Act,” stated Balber.
Of the purported dirt on Clinton that the Russians were supposed to provide to Trump Jr., that turned out to be little more than a passing reference to three Russian billionaire brothers known as the “Ziff brothers,” who ran a hedge fund company and were alleged to have helped finance former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and other Democrat Party endeavors, potentially even the Clinton campaign as well.
Once again, we see the media has fallen short for the umpteenth time on what they guaranteed would be ironclad proof of their Trump/Russia collusion narrative.
Perhaps they will stop beating this obviously dead horse, but odds are they will find some other club with which to beat it some more.
Please share this on Facebook and Twitter so everyone can see how the Trump Jr./Russian lawyer meeting wasn’t really about dishing dirt on Hillary or colluding to win the election.
