House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went over the edge and accused President Donald Trump of seeking to “make America white again” with the immigration plan he has on the table. But one Democrat called her out for her extreme comments and calling everything racist, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.VA).
Manchin is one of the few adults remaining in the Democratic party who actually believes that you’re supposed to work out deals on legislation in a civilized manner.
He was speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union” and said that Pelosi should stop being divisive.
Relevant part 3:43.
From Daily Caller:
“You know what, we don’t need that type of rhetoric on either side. From Nancy, Paul Ryan or anybody else” said Manchin, of West Virginia. “We have the wall. We need to repair the wall. We’ll need to build more wall. We need to do whatever we can to secure the borders.”
Manchin said Congress is set to meet Monday evening to discuss immigration reform and discouraged any thoughts of another government shutdown.
“We’re going to meet Monday night, start over again. Trying to find that commonality that we’ve been able to do. And there’s no way that anyone should be considering any more of a shutdown, even talking the nonsense of a shutdown,” he said. “Let’s get down to business and fix it. And we can do it. The president’s laid out what he wants. That’s a good starting point. Let’s see if it’s something we can agree on. Something we need to adjust and something we can negotiate with.”
Tapper couldn’t quite believe that a Democrat was criticizing Pelosi or talking about agreeing with the need for a wall.
Manchin said he was condemning all crazy rhetoric whoever it was coming from. “Just because someone is Republican, is not my enemy and we have to work together.”
Someone who believes in doing his job and not making a production number out of every event.
That obviously came as quite a surprise to Tapper who has had to deal with many who aren’t quite as professional.
As Trump himself pointed out, it’s very hard to agree with someone who’s standing in your face screaming that you’re a racist. Sen. Dick Durbin (D_ ) did exactly blowing up Trump’s reported ‘s**thole’ comments to the media and calling him a racist. That was what killed the earlier discussion when they were close to a deal.
